Why the Right Work Environment Matters More Than Ever in the Age of AI
If your workplace doesn't encourage experimentation with AI, odds are you won't get to experiment at all. Here's how to assess your employer's AI adoption level.
Over the past few years, I’ve watched organizations of all sizes wrestle with how to bring AI into their workflows.
Some move cautiously, others recklessly fast—and a rare few find the sweet spot.
As someone who’s been inside different types of orgs during this evolution, I’ve seen the impact this has not just on business outcomes but on personal growth.
Here’s the honest truth
If your workplace doesn’t encourage experimentation with AI, odds are you won’t get to experiment at all.
After-hours learning sounds great until life hits—commutes, chores, family, fatigue.
That’s why, for me, choosing a workplace where AI experimentation is part of the day job is essential.
It allows for compounding learning—you experiment while doing your core work, then deepen those learnings after hours if you want to take it further.
The 4 Levels of AI Adoption in the Enterprise
Think of this as a spectrum to help you assess not only your current employer but also any future role you’re considering:
- Level 1: AI-Resistant — No tools allowed, strict policies against AI use
- Level 2: AI-Tolerant — Personal use okay, but not integrated into workflows
- Level 3: AI-Encouraged — Tools provided, experimentation supported
- Level 4: AI-Native — AI is embedded in how work gets done, part of the culture
Because in 2025, your ability to grow with AI is increasingly tied to where you work.
