Scratch Your Own Itch: The Simple Path Out of AI Analysis Paralysis

artificial intelligence (ai) newsletter Apr 28, 2025

Whenever someone asks, “How do I even begin with all these AI tools?” I hear the same unspoken fear: What if I choose the wrong idea and waste my time? That fear leads to analysis paralysis—scrolling through demos and tutorials without actually building anything.

Why starting with your own pain works

  1. Instant motivation - If a task annoys you every single day, you’ll push through the learning curve just to make that pain disappear.

  2. Built-in feedback - You’re your own first user. Every tweak is driven by real frustration, not guesswork.

  3. Quick wins snowball - The moment you fix one small headache, your confidence spikes. Next time, you’ll tackle something bigger with less hesitation.

My proof in real life

After being laid off — yes, you’re the first to know, it happened again - tracking my burn rate became a daily stressor.

I checked a number of finance apps — but none could help with THIS specific problem.

Usually I open a Google Sheet and manually map everything.

But I took a new approach - I hacked a tiny script that loaded my bank CSV and told me, in plain English, “You’ve got X months of runway.”

It wasn’t pretty, but the instant relief was priceless—and it opened the door to turning that hack into my Fired Finance project.

(Stay tuned for that — hoping to actually launch it in the coming days!)

Your three-step jump-start

  1. Write down one chore you dread doing today. Nothing fancy—maybe it’s copying data or rewriting the same email.

  2. Describe a “good enough” fix in one sentence. Example: “Sort my receipts into ‘work’ and ‘personal’ folders automatically.”

  3. Open an AI helper and paste that sentence. Let the tool draft the code, then nudge it until the job is done—messy is fine for v1.
